Bio:

Sam Briegel is an artist/potter/educator living just outside the city of Baltimore, Maryland. She splits her time between part-time teaching at the Maryland Institute College of Art and making pots in her home studio. Briegel is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee and has traveled across the country pursuing various residencies and educational opportunities- most notably receiving an MFA from Ohio University in 2018. Sam enjoys giving workshops on her innovative printing techniques and teaches in-person and virtual workshops a couple times a year. Porcelain is her clay body of choice because of its delicacy and translucency. She aims to create pots that celebrate femininity and quilts together texture and print inspired by clothing. Her process is a combination of slab building and wheel throwing. She works in the Cone 6 range for its wide selection of color options.

Statement:

My work reclaims the identity of clothing textures and patterns. The body and the vessel share a similar vocabulary of lips, shoulders, bellies, and feet. I use this comparison to clothe implied bodies. As functional pottery, these works demand interactions through use. Akin to our clothing, these interactions also make us aware of our bodies. What happens to the clothes that we love but can never wear again? These articles contribute to our identities. What happens when our clothes no longer comfort us? As a female potter, I am offering a reclaimed comfort that delivers nourishment, tactile moments, and conversation.
